Barangay Cardona

The present official name of barrio is Cardona. The place was originally a jungle. There were tall trees, bamboos, and grasses growing all around. When the people mostly Ilocano’s immigrated to the place they cleared the forest and planted varieties of plants not for commercial purposes but solely for the food. Few as they were they made treat improvements and came to like the place with determination to live as they did. In the course of the time several able bodied men came over, some with money to spear, other rich much better ideas in farming, meaning and the other home industries.
 
Several among these commerce and planned to make improvements which they did one of them was the late Don Juan Cardona who by his good leadership and wealth made Resolution together with able barrio mates naming the place, CARDONA after him 1987. Since then, the place was called Cardona up to the present. The people became very much interested and conscious of themselves for improvements and thru their intentions better farming ways were adopted food relationship were observed and above all developed faith in God, goodwill to their fellow men and respect for authority. They lived in peace and contentment.
 
A sitio included within the jurisdiction of the barrio, called MALASIN. The sitio was so named because the groups of houses were separated from the barrio proper. After close of the administration of the former Mayor Pacifico Lagade in 1951. Municipal council made Resolution Making MALASIN an independent barrio. This was approved by the Province Board of Tarlac. Barangay Cardona is located on the Southern part of Gerona 6 kilometers away from the Town proper, the neighboring of barangay Cardona from west part is Malayep, Northern part is Matayuncab from East Amacalan and Villa Paz and Southern part is San Jose respectively. It has an area of 296,670 hectares. The major livelihood of the community is farming, by planting of agricultural products such as sugar cane, rice, turnips, root crops, and vegetables. This barangay has a total number of populations of 2,406 as of January 2008. It has a 589 household. At present barangay Cardona divided into six (6) Puroks which Masagana, Purok Namnama, Purok Saranay, Purok Maligaya, Purok Kappia and Purok Cotibo. These Puroks are under the supervision of the Barangay Kagawad.On the Day Care Student the Barangay has a total population of 30 students, while of preparatory has 26 enrolled. It has a complete elementary and High School level. This SY 2007-2008, elementary school has 285 enrolled for the June 2008 has a total number of 277. While on High School level has total population of 437 for the SY 2007-2008, has a total population of 401 enrolled students.
DATE OF ESTABLISHMENTS
 
Some of the early inhabitants of the barrio were the late Juan Cardona, Nicomedes Balaba Esteban Ramos, Angelo Ular and others.
 
The present barrio lives from its sugar cane, rice vegetables, camote and turnips. Each inhabitants all hard workers and law abiding citizens a complete elementary school was organized recently. Its rural government is run just like the ordinary barrios all over the country today. Its heard is the barrio lieutenant. The first Teniente Del Barrio was the late Don Nicomedes Balaba followed by others in succession like Leoncio Sumaoang, Jorge Domingo, Ponciano Granl, Apolinario Granil, Bernardo Granil, Teodoro Mangani, Teodoro Lucas, and the present barrio Lieutenant is Marcos Castro.
STORY TO THE SITIOS WITHIN THE JURISDICTION
 
Cardona was the old and new of the barrio had no sitio or sitios de populated. The sitio that Cardona has is MALASIN. Malasin means some what separated. Malasin remains the sitio of Cardona but its name was change to VILLA PAZ by virtue of a resolution made by the people of MALASIN, approved by the Municipal Council of Gerona and the Provincial Board that it maybe made a barrio apart from Cardona. More of the people of Villa Paz were evacuated during the Japanese occupation. This is one reason to which the Progress of Villa Paz can be attributed.
IMPORTANT FACTS, INCIDENTS OR EVENT THAT TOOK PLACE
 
During the Spanish Rule, the inhabitants of Cardona under the leadership of the late Capitan Juan Cardona rose in rebellion against the Spaniards. Cardona was then under the jurisdiction of General FRANCISCO MACABULOS General Macabulos whose headquarters was it Pitombayog, Mayantoc, Tarlac ordered the Cardona people to secure food supplies and relief for his insurgent forces then fighting against the Spaniards. The order was so strict that some of those unable to give were maltreated by the insurgent forces. As a result, these mere disorders, killing and robberies.
 
During the Dominican regime, there was a reign, of tenor, too. Robberies and kidnappers here and there mere prevalent. People from different places invaded the barrio just to create disorders. When the reign tenor was at its height, the late Capitan Juan Cardona met a heroic death while leading the people is their fight against lawlessness.
With the arrival of the Japanese forces, not many disorders took place in Cardona. This maybe due to the presence of a resistance forces in the barrio.
HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
A Barrio Primary School was established and organized in 1926. The School was acquired through donations with total area of 9,792 sq. meters. After the war came the reconstruction period. Only a few houses were rehabilitated and it was made into a complete Elementary School to accommodate the big member of enrollment. As years went by enrollment in this school increases. Parents and Graduates of this Elementary School have encountered many problems in pursuing their studies to finish their Secondary Education. They have to walk six (6) kilometers a day to reach the High School in the town proper. It was during the term of the late Diosdado Granil, the Barangay Officials made a resolution requesting the dead of their Barangay High School in Cardona. In 1970, the Cardona Barangay High School thus exists.
